Alec-Stewart-Alex-Surrey-Awards
Alex picking up his award from his childhood hero, Surrey and England legend, Alec Stewart
After a series of broken mirrors, windows and vases, Alex's Mother took him along to Esher Cricket Club, aged 5. His love for the sport has only grown, playing at Esher every Summer since. He now opens the batting for the 1st XI and has scored over 500 runs this season...and counting... Now in his 9th year of coaching, Alex coaches hundreds of boys each year at local schools, clubs and in the County set-up. In recognition of his achievements Alex was chosen to be “Surrey Young Coach of the Year 2010”

Cricketing moments I would rather forget:

  • Trying to get a 6 off the last ball of the match to get a 100, but a pitiful attempt left me caught and bowled...
  • Running out 3 of my own team-mates in a match
  • Being banned from bowling for the match by the Umpire for running down the middle of the wicket
  • Dropping sitters...
  • Only realising that the ball we were playing with in a Twenty20 was pink after I looked back to see it, along with my off stump, cartwheeling towards the boundary- on the very first delivery of the match!

Cricketing moments I would like to have made onto BBC World News:

  • Getting a 5wicket against Holland A in Amsterdam
  • Winning the Surrey Cup every year from U9-14 level with club or school
  • Scoring an unbeaten 150* for Old Tiffinians

Priceless comments on the pitch:

  • Opposition batsman asks the Umpire to move the screens- “It's not going to make any difference, you're still going to get out” he chirps
  • Discovering how far the changing rooms are from the pitch at an away game- “Ricky Ponting does not have to put up with this...” I moan.
A team mate quips: "You're right, that's because he is playing in the Ashes at Lord's today"
